Do you remember when you first found out you had herpes?
Do you remember wanting to talk to someone about it but feeling like you couldn’t?
Do you remember feeling so very alone?
Do you remember finding The Original Herpes Home Page (HHP) on-line?
Do you remember wishing you had found this site sooner?

The goal of this project is to spread the word about HHP so that others who have herpes or who are newly diagnosed can find us more quickly.

Help spread the word about HHP so we can help others who need it. We understand that anonymity is key, so it’s ok if you don’t feel comfortable giving a supply to your doctor during your next visit. Instead, a small supply of flyers (about 5-10) can be mailed anonymously with an HHP coverletter to your doctor’s office, your college Health Center (even if you’ve already graduated!) or the local Planned Parenthood etc. No one will know you sent them.

LINK to flyer and cover letter: http://racoon.com/flyer.htm

To help us keep track of the distribution of the flyer, please participate in the attached poll, “Where I mailed/delivered flyers” and (if you feel comfortable) please post the State/Country in which you distributed the flyer.

Thank you!

muffin

PS. Special “thank you’s” go to…
…daria for letting us quote her in the cover letter.
…windy, howl, and grace for preliminary reviews of the flyer.
…optimistic for a candid opinion about the project.
…rajah for collaborating with me on both pieces and creating the flyer web page.

I participated in the poll based on where I was diagnosed for having herpes simplex virus. I didn't realize the poll was about where we were going to hand out the flyers.

By the way.. the flyer is an excellent idea!! Gayla and I have something similar (but different) for both our sites: www.yoshi2me.com AND www.herpesonline.org

Keep up the good work you guys!!

Angela

Would love your feedback on it and what we might do to improve on the information. You need acrobat reader in order to view this flyer. We have our set up two to a page so that when people print them off all you have to do is cut right down the middle and that way you can two flyers per page. Know what I mean? Anyway.. here's what Our Flyer looks like.

One thing Gayla and I have noticed is that teaming up has really increased the help we are able to provide. You can definately see it reflected on all of our sites. HHP is another site her and I have always supported.

I made up flyers and business cards for our groups in NY. We have a "tear-off" flyer. I found that the business cards are more practical though, because they're easy to carry around.

I got the business cards at www.vistaprint.com . They are free except for shipping costs (around $5).

This poll isn't working the way I was hoping since you can only vote once. So if you are interested in telling us where you sent/brought flyers, just post here...I just popped 5 flyers and a cover letter in an envelope.

omtomd brought one to her doctor's office

I mailed small supplies to:
2 doctor's offices
3 colleges (including UMass Amherst)
Family Planning (Boston)
a smaller Family Planning clinic in the 'burbs
Planned Parenthood (Boston)

Not if you don't want to. It will most likely get to where you are sending it without a problem.

Thanks again!

I'm really glad you guys are doing this! When I found out I felt horrible! My docter made me feel really weird (like I wasn't already feeling like that). I started trying to get as much information as I could because I wanted to know what was going on. This web-site is awesome. I also handed out pamplets to my ob after I started looking info. up. who told me that genital herpes type 1 isn't very common. Well the test came back saying I had that one!! I will send them some of these.... thats a good idea.

It's unfortunate that a lot of doctors are not up-to-date on herpes so the patients don't get the right info either. Every little bit we can do helps.

Of course, as you've learned genital HSV1 is actually very common, but it's a more recent phenonema, due in part to the increased popularity of oral sex in the younger age demographics.

My previous GP left the medical group that my wife and I go to. I met my new doctor this morning and am very favorably impressed on all counts. He's relatively young, but took time with me to talk about everything that I wanted to disuss.

I explained my relationship to HHP and He was appreciative of the HHP flyers that I handed him. He said, "I wish I had these last week. I'm going to mail one to the patient I diagnosed and who seemed pretty upset." Way to go Doc!! I hope he drops in here to see what's going on.

Thats really good. Its hard sometimes to find a docter who isn't "closed minded" on this issue. You think they would know a little more or act differently because herpes is pretty common but some (like mine) make you feel dirty. You know what would be another good idea.... a business card that could go in your wallet that says the web adress. You could print alot more on the peice of printing paper.

Hi Kayley! Thank you for passing a long the flyers.

I love that business card idea. I agree that the business card would be preferrable. It would be a little more discreet and convenient for the patient. We do have a business card design but there were logistical problems. Our goal was to keep it simple for the person handing out the communication piece. If we have them print up 8 business cards on a piece of paper then someone has to sit there and cut the page up. And I wouldn't think any of the sites would want to invest in that nice perforated business card paper you can get from Staples or OfficeMax. The other option would be for HHP to incur the cost of printing the cards...but that could get very costly and HHP has no money.

If you would like to print up some business cards, let us know and we'll get a template to you. And let us know if you have any other ideas too!

Thanks again.

You'll get the Avery label number that corresponds. Do you have Word? It'll be in MS Word format and the Avery software that works with it is free as a download from the Avery website, http://avery.com/

The Vistaprint.com site that Howl mentioned above allows you to create "free" business cards and just pay the shipping and handling.
