"concerned ive passed genital hsv-1 to my friends"

so i am a 21 year old female whos had genital hsv-1 for about a year and a half. my first outbreak was so mild i wasnt sure what it was at first and being a virgin, was especially devestated when i found out i had it. im still a virgin (have decided to wait til i find someone i feel like i want to date to tell them before we have sex etc...thats a whole other story). im super careful about not letting guys go down on me or touch their penis to my vagina because i dont want to spread anything. but on monday night i think i made a mistake..

a group of four friends and i had been drinking and decided to do a bit of experimenting. two guys, two girls. one of the guys and the other girl are dating but in an open relationship. so the one guy fingered me for a bit and we made out, and then we switched and he made out with my girl friend while i made out and had the other guy finger me. i thought fingering was a safe practice until i was in the shower the next day and found a small bump in my vagina...this happens to me every once in a while..a hard bump that you can feel more than you can see..is just slightly sore but doesnt come to a head or look like a blister but more like an ingrown. since my initial outbreak i get one or two of these every once in a while..its bit confusing if its an outbreak or not and never really much of a bother to me.

ANYWAY-- so now im so so so worried that i may have transfered genital hsv-1 to my girl friend. the first guy fingered me for a bit..not too long..and im sure there were a few minutes between when he fingered me and when he fingered her..but there was certainly moisture and friction, things that cause herpes to be transmitted more easily. ive read conflicting info all over the internet and posted on a herpes forum but the only response was 'it is not likely that you transfered it to the other girl.' but this was not a no risk situation. i also read that its possible to get herpes on your finger...i feel now that i cant do ANYTHING sexual!

so basically im looking for some insight from you guys. i would feel so horrible if infected my friend because i love her dearly, and what if she had sex with her boyfriend and passed it along to him as well?? i dont know if its a big enough concern for me to really have to worry...id rather not tell them if i dont have to because this is something id like to keep to myself and honestly i was drunk and didnt think twice about touching. i have a sort of gossipy group of friends who are open about this kind of thing and i really dont want all my friends/aquaintances i know to know i have this. im bugging out and could really use some opinions or insight or something!

I'll ask what everyone does on here: how were you diagnosed? The bump you describe doesn't sound like herpes, which usually comes as a blister that pops to form a lesion. If you were diagnosed with a blood test, it's possible that you've had type 1 for ages and that you have it orally, which is the most common form and location for the virus. Also, a massive amount (I've heard over 50% of the population) has HSV1, either orally as cold sores or genitally, so chances are, anyone you hook up with will already have the virus and therefore immunity from catching it in another location, so no need to keep yourself from having any sexual contact.

It's true that friction helps transmit herpes, and moisture keeps it alive, but outside its natural environment, herpes dies quickly. I'd think there's a very slim chance you passed the virus to your friend, if she didn't already have type 1.

I know how you feel about the not feeling like you are able to do much sexually anymore. I go through the same emotions it seems. I am a 22 year old female and I am afraid of spreading my genital HSV to my mouth so I will not go down on a guy if we are active with a condom and especially without. And it sucks because I feel like that takes away from the intimacy.

I am very cautious about it because even though my partner doesn't have HSV, we do have intercourse and sometimes we don't use anything for protection but there is always that chance were he might contract it sometime and I or he won't know it and then if I go down on him and get it orally. I already have it once I just don't want to deal with that again some place else.

But I am a sexual person or at least I was more so back then compared to now. And it seems like there is only so much you can do now. Also, it takes away from the experience if you have to worry about transfer every time you are active ya know...?

Just had to vent a little bit and tell you what I thought Your not alone hun that is for sure. And I hope everything was alright with your friends!

Since you already have HSV (were you typed to know for sure it's Type II?) genitally, you have the antibodies which protect you from getting it again in a new location (such as orally). Also, in general, Type II doesn't tend to "prefer" the mouth and getting it orally is a pretty uncommon. It would be really unlikely to get it on your mouth from the scenario you describe.

I am not sure what type it is. I asked for a test but all they gave me was a hsv blood test they never told me the type they just said its positive. Is there a specific test I need to ask for so they do it right this time? Thanks for the help

Yeah, we answered you in one of your other posts in the Info. Forum. You need a type-specific IgG blood test or a typed culture or PCR swab of an OB.

Alright so I called the doctor to make an appointment saying I wanted a select test done and they called me back after that conversation and said that they still had the results from the first blood test I had in FEB this year. So apparently they just never told me what type when they already knew back then. lol My point is they told me I have HSV 1 & 2....so now my question is what does this mean?? How can I have both? I have never had any coldsores at all on my mouth or anything. Does this mean that it is there now too? I am confused and havent done much research yet about types since i didnt know which one I had. PLease help! I am feeling a little lost. Thanks

I suggest that you ask them to send you a hard copy of your results and then you can post the results here.

Most people will test positive for HSVI and never remember ever getting a cold sore since this is usually gotten in childhood.

Usually a positive test for HSVI is considered an oral infection sans symptoms, but you did have symptoms and tested positive for HSVII. HSVII will protect you from getting HSVI but not the other way around. An oral infection can be passed genitally via oral sex even in the absense of symptoms since oral HSVI sheds more than HSVII does.

Post your results here and they will be interpreted for you.

Transferring HSV-1 to another person's hand is SO incredibly rare. And transferring it then to another person's body is even more unthinkable. I wouldn't worry about it. You're stressing over so much, it's ok hun!

I'm not just spouting out this randomly, the information had come from a doctor who knows the in's and out's of herpes all too well.

Take care, and keep your head up!

Cheers,
E M I L I A
