"Just contracted Herpes and 35 weeks pregnant."

I am 35 weeks pregnant. I have just learned that I have contracted Herpes. The only person I have come around with it has been my sister. Not sure how I contracted it, and its really not important now as to how I got it.

I need as much information as possible. I have so many questions...

1. So late in my pregnancy, will I have to have a C-Section?

2. Can I give it to someone else through surfaces? (considering thats how I got it)... If so, whats the best way to prevent the virus from living on surfaces as I live with my mother and my nephew and very soon a new little girl?

3. How do I cope with this?

I am a scared 25 year old woman and Never in my life thought that i would ever have this condition, but now that I do, I cannot be neglegent as my little sister and allow it to spread to anyone in my family. I have to know all precautions that need to be taken. Please any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Concerned Mother

The only way to contract genital herpes is from sexual contact (including oral sex). You cannot get it from casual contact with surfaces in your home. The virus dies pretty quickly away from the body.

People can have genital herpes and remain totally asymptomatic, so many people have this virus and don't realize that they have it. A routine test for STDs does not include a test for herpes so unless someone has specifically been tested they will not know that they have it. Many people get genital herpes from oral sex with someone who has the virus orally in the form of a cold sore.

If this is newly acquired (and this would not be newly acquired from casual social contact), then I think you would need a c-section to protect the baby since the biggest risk to the baby during birth is when the mother has a newly acquired herpes infection. What did your doctor say? Are you taking antivirals? How were you diagnosed? Are you having an outbreak now? If this is not newly acquired and you aren't having an outbreak when you go into labor, you are not putting your baby at risk of getting the virus.

You cannot pass this on to family members with casual contact.

Well, the only person who has it that i know of is my best friend. And sense I am not a lesbian by no means she transmitted it to me through some way shape form or fashion... either sharing drinks or smoking after her or something. And even my doctor said that it was even possible. I am taking meds right now. I havent gone back to the doctor yet sense the test. They called me and told me it was positive and put me on a round of valtrex. I have to go back on the 7th to find out what they want to do as far as my baby goes. I have kinda gotten used to the idea of having a c-section though now. After doing all my research I feel it would be the best bet for her.

Your doctor is incorrect if he told you that you could get genital herpes from sharing a drink or a cigarette. Is there a special reason why you are finding it hard to believe that you got genital herpes from sexual contact?

Not everyone who has herpes has symptoms, so not everyone knows that they have it. Not everyone that has it is going to be honest with you. You can have it for years without symptoms. All of those things make it hard to figure out where you got it.
