"I know NOTHING. Please Help."
Getting a diagnosis for me was the worst thing possible. I had only been with two partners in my life and did not see it as a possibility. The doctor I saw was not very informative and I generally know nothing other than I was diagnosed with HSV-1 oral. After I was told that I had it and was instructed to continue the meds, the doctor hung up. I have no idea what my next step is.

My questions are: 1. How can I have safe sex? 2.Do other daily activities need to change (I know this seems crazy, but do you clean your toilet seat after each use?)3. If I had an outbreak on my genitals (I think I got it from oral sex), will it come back on my genitals even though I don't have HSV 2?

I'm sorry if I seem like an idiot. I'm just scared. I have gotten no useful help from medical professionals (other than being told to turn to webpages) and I have nowhere else to go for answers. Please tell me the MUST knows.

Well first of all you are not an idiot; you are just uneducated about herpes which most of the medical profession and most people are too. This site is superb and there is already a lot of info posted here. Also you need to read Terri Warren's book which can be accessed online.

Anyway, do you have HSV1 on your genitals? It is most commonly passed along during oral sex. HSV needs intimate contact to be transmitted so you don't need to clean your toilet seat--just the usual cleaning you normally do to keep your bathroom clean is sufficient. Sex is never safe--even if you don't have HSV. You should always tell any potential partner before you have intimate contact that you have HSV. Terri's booklet has really useful info about all that. I've had HSV 1 and 2 for many years (I'm 60) and my life has been pretty normal--romances, marriage etc.

So let's have you read the booklet and then post further questions etc. And also take the time to scroll through the posts of this site and a lot of your questions will be answered. It is very normal to be scared when you find you have herpes. Go to the Home page on this site and click on Free Herpes Handbook and it will be Terri's book.
