"doctor refuses to give medicine 30 weeks pregnant"

   Hi,
Iīm new here I registered because I need some help on what to do.
Iīm freaking out here!
Iīm from Holland and since a while they have a new herpes protocol here when you are pregnant.
I think itīs totally nuts!
They donīt give you medication anymore they say there is no problem in delivering your baby without medication.
The docter told me oh even when you are having an outbreak there is no problem giving birth we can cover the parts where you have an outbreak or put betadine on them and we can allways treat the baby.
...we can allways treat the baby...are they insane?!!
I canīt believe they are doing this, I am freaking out.
Please help me Iīm so scared I will give my baby herpes.

the only thing I can recommend is that you continue to talk to your obgyn about your concerns. Daily suppressive therapy during pregnancy doesn't reduce transmission but it does make it more likely you'd be ob free at the time of delivery so that you can avoid a c section.

no ob at the time of delivery and the risk of transmission to the baby is less than 1% if that helps you to deal with all of this.

They say you donīt need that and that even if you have an ob during delivery the baby wonīt get herpes because the baby has antibodyīs from the mom....to me it sounds like, excuse my french bullshit!
I am panicking and they just wonīt listen en keep telling me there is no risk for the baby.

They donīt do c sections either only if itīs a primary herpes infection otherwise they say even if you are having an ob you can still deliver vaginaly.

it's still overall low risk that you'd transmit but I know certainly if I had an active lesion present, I'd insist on a C section even with all the stats I know from reading far too many research studies on herpes and pregnancy. In the US , we are very litigation happy so providers tend to just do c sections easier due to fears of law suits regardless of what the literature shows.

Fingers crossed you don't have an ob at the time and don't need to stress yourself out more over it all!

The only other thing I can suggest is looking for a herpes support group near you in your country and talking to others who have been pregnant to see what their experiences with providers have been locally. It's a little late to change providers but from the been there done that files, I had a planned c section with my first child due to numerous recurrences during pregnancy - the peace of mind was worth it to me. I know I'd never be comfortable delivering with an active lesion present despite the stats unless I had no other option ( like baby was coming now and no time for anything but a vaginal delivery ).

So how low is the risk of transmitting it to your baby when you are having an ob when you are delivering? She told me your baby wonīt get herpes even if you have an ob because the baby has antibodies. I donīt believe her! Maybe itīs a low risk but I donīt believe there is no risk at all.
The most frustrating part for me is that I feel they really are not taking me seriously, they donīt even let me finish a sentence itīs just ridiculous!
I used to live in north america but moved back to Europe a couple of months ago, I still have some aciclovir from my doctor there but I
donīt think itīs enough.
I have 35 pills 400 mg. Would it help to take 400mg a day for the last month or is that not enough?
Right now thatīs my only option!
I feel a lot calmer just talking to you about this, thanks
At least here I am take seriously.

If it's a well established infection from prior to pregnancy and the baby is full term, the risk is still around 1% or so if I recall even with an active lesion present. Most studies where the mom knew she had hsv2 prior to pregnancy, even if she had an obvious lesion, the virus still was not transmitted to the baby. the majority of neonatal herpes infections are from mom's who contract hsv2 during pregnancy. I'm like you though, I wouldn't be comfortable delivering with an active lesion no matter what.

you'd need to take 400mg 3x/day for the last month so no you don't have enough

Iīve had herpes since december 2009, I got it from my fiance. Stupid doctor said you canīt give someone herpes if you donīt have an ob...wel guess what, you sure can!
See I didnīt know that the risk is still around 1 %, nobody told me that all they do is keep telling me your baby wonīt get herpes. They donīt explane a damn thing!
This calms me down alot, thanks. Still I would be more comfortable taking meds. Iīm just going to tell them, I have meds and I will order the rest of what I need on the internet if you donīt help me. If thatīs the way it has to be then thatīs the way it has to be.
Itīs my body, itīs my baby I think I have a say in the matter.

Thanks for listening to me, Iīm a lot calmer now

have they been letting you take acyclovir/valtrex for ob's during pregnancy? Perhaps ask for a prescription if they are and just save it up so you have enough?

Ok I found this in an article and thought you'd find it helpful ( as will others reading this post too I"m sure ). It's from the cleveland clinic journal of medicine :

time of delivery affects the risk of neonatal
infection. Overall, in 60% to 80% of cases of
neonatal herpes, the mother acquired genital
herpes in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Among women with HSV in the genital
secretions at the time of labor, the risk of
neonatal herpes is 30% to 50% if she has
newly acquired genital herpes, compared with
3% if she has reactivation disease. In
contrast, the risk of neonatal transmission is 1
in 4,500 among HSV-2-seropositive women
who are without symptoms of genital herpes at
the time of labor.

I was close - 3%, not 1% , I knew it was pretty low.

Well I went to see a gynecologist last week and he said he never heard of such a protocol and that he would look into it, so good news is he didn't immediately say no. I have to go see him again in two weeks and I hope he has some good news for me.

he can check pubmed.gov for herpes and pregnancy articles by Dr Zane Brown - he's done a lot of the research on herpes and pregnancy.

   Finally good news
The doctor decided to ignore the stupid protocol and gave me medicine.
400 mg aciclovir 3x a day, Iīm happy at least I donīt have to worry about an ob during delivery.
Usually they stick to the protocol, I think I got very lucky with this doctor.

Well kinda nervous because with the first one I was only in labor for 2 hours and then he was born. They told me the second one is usually quicker so that kinda freaks me out and having herpes offcourse, didnīt have that with the first baby. But at the same time Iīm sick of being pregnant and really really curious, canīt wait to meet this baby

I will absolutely let you know how it all went, thank you for your advise and for listening to me
