"outbreaks and suppressive therapy when prego"

Hi everyone! I know it's early, but wanted to share my good news and get some thoughts on my situation. I did IVF over the summer and am now 7 1/2 weeks pregnant! Yay!

Just to recap, I contracted HSV2 genitally in February 2010 and it affected my bladder very badly. I was told to take 2000mg/day for a year. I was able to reduce the dose gradually over the year, and by June of this year I have been taking 500mg twice daily. I have had outbreaks in my bladder - it gets very sore, like nothing I have experienced before, and after about 2 to 3 days I'm back to normal. I usually up my dose to 1500mg when I notice this. I've never seen anything externally when I have outbreaks.

I'm pretty sure that during the transfer of the embryo I was having an outbreak. The egg retrieval 3 days before that was very painful and left me uncomfortable, and it wasn't until a day after the transfer that I put it together and realized that an outbreak had started. I upped my dose for 2 days and things started to settle by then. Could having had an outbreak during an embryo transfer be dangerous or harmful to the embryo?

Second, I had spoken to an ob-gyn last year about taking suppressive therapy throughout pregnancy. He was totally unconcerned about it, even the dose.

With all the pills etc that I am taking, the valacyclovir is last on the list, and I have forgotten to take it quite a bit - usually only 500mg/day. So I have had 2 outbreaks so far. What are your thoughts on me keeping to 500mg/day, and upping it later in the pregnancy, or should I remember to take it twice a day? Do you think it's more detrimental to have outbreaks during pregnancy or to take the medicine?

Sorry this is long, your thoughts are greatly appreciated, and thanks again for being here. You are such a wonderful resource and support!

Thanks,
CG

as far as we know, no issues with taking valtrex when pregnant, even during the 1st trimester. same with ob's aren't an issue when it's a well established infection like yours.

CONGRATS on being pregnant!!!

I'd try to take your valtrex at least once daily and go from there. if it isn't controlling your recurrences, make the effort to take it twice daily so you aren't so uncomfortable.

The first step in stopping the perceived stigma about genital herpes - is to stop believing in it yourself
