"What does false positive in the antobodies test mean but have a positi"

Foung out a few weeks ago that I have hsv2; however it is a false positive. I was told that meant not active. The abrasion had a culture done and came back positive a few days later. Boyfriend of 2 years tested negative. What does this mean?

False positives rarely happen but false negatives can easily happen with this virus. Having a culture done on a sore is considered the GOLD standard of testing and not a false positive. It tells you what you have and where. The virus was active if you had an abrasion swabbed/cultured. You are not contagious 24/7 so it is possible that your b/f of two years has not caught it from you or that his test is not a conclusive false negative and he does have it but has not had an outbreak yet. If you can get a copy of his test results, you can post the test numbers here, less any personal info, and the knowledgeable people here will look at them and explain them better to you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, so for me, a false positive just means I have hsv2 in my blood but not active, correct? But that the abrasion showed signs of hsv. When I reported the abrasion, my doc was sure it was a skin abrasion due to multiple sex in 24 hours.. She was stunned to see I was hsv2 positive. With the positive culture, is there no need to get a second opinion? I have read that 2nd opinions are encouraged. Also, how is it possible that my bf hasn't gotten it? His doc has encouraged testing in 3 months.. Thank you for your help.

I am not sure why you think you have a false positive. False positives rarely happen. If you had a sore/abrasion that was swabbed and cultured that came back as HSVII then it was active and there was nothing false about it. By having this swab/culture, you know that you have HSVII and where you have it. A swab/culture of a sore is the best test to determine if the sore is HSVII.

It takes most people 12-16 weeks post exposure to develop the antibodies that a blood test will look for--hence why the doctor probably told your b/f to wait 3 months before retesting. During this time if he does have an outbreak then he can get the sore swabbed/cultured as long as it is within the sore's first 24-48 hours of appearance otherwise he could have a FALSE negative.

Next time you have a sore pop up you can go and get another swab/culture or you can go and get a blood test any time post the 12-16 weeks you think that you were exposed. You have already been tested by swab/culture and told what the results are.

If you test positive for HSVII then you have it even if you do not get outbreaks. Ask your doctor for a hard copy of your results and post the number here so that it may be better explained to you,.
