It's not common, but it is possible to get recurrent headaches from herpes. If that's the cause, then antivirals should help. More likely, it's something else.

Headaches, among other things, are a typical part of prodrome for me. In fact, that's one of the ways that I know an OB is on the way because of the headache. If I take acyclovir in time I can usually stop the process and the headache goes away.

I used to brag that I never had a headache in my life - never took an aspirin for a headache - didn't know what a headache felt like unless I had a fever or sinus infection. Since H, I get loads of headaches, especially when the virus is active above the waist - took topamax for it for awhile - when the antivirals work.........they help curb the headaches.

I haven't even had herpes for a week, and I'm on about day 4/5 of my first OB. Yesterday I started getting really bad headaches, yesterday I also started taking Valtrex for the OB, I'm not sure if it's related, does Valtrex bring on the headaches?

I also read somewhere that I should expect headaches at the start of herpes because my body is adapting to the virus..is this true?

Maybe get her to try headache specific painkillers, there are some herbal stuff that really helps too. I had herbal tea earlier and it cleared my headache, if only for a little while.

Good luck though!

   Nopainnogain--
Some people do experience a headache as a side effect of the antivirals. Usually after a few days it subsides. If you find it to be a problem, you could try Acyclovir and see if that's any better for you. They are very similar drugs, but some people just do better on one vs. another.

Also, maybe make sure you have some food in you when you take the Valtrex; that might sort of dilute it enough to help mitigate side effects. Can't hurt anyway.

C.

I had headache after an OB as well. Went on Acyclovir and in 2 days,
it was gone. Have had this lower back pain for 2 weeks now
as though my muscles are giving up. Never have been in this state
before. Is it HSV2 related? the jury is still out there. I am
about 2 days to finish up on my suppression dose of Acyclovir.
Need to get a refill and see what happens.
Kris

I have been pretty lost and confused on if I have genital herpes or not, my IgG tests were negative for HSV2 at 5 and 6 months after my exposure. I have had none stop issues since this one night, I have been having headaches that last for most of the day and carry on into the next. This is a pretty horrible disease if thats whats causing my symptoms.
