Been diagnosed a little over a year and a half by a blood test. Know that I have had it somewhere from 6-18 years at this point.

Have had some periods of itching over the past year, but since getting diagnosed with BV, I really think that was the cause. I know that I never experienced that kind of thing prior to my Herpes diagnosis b/c I never even knew what BV was and had I had a period of itching that lasted more than 1-2 days I would have been running to a doc not knowing what it was.

I have never taken antivirals, though I now have a bottle of acyclovir waiting in case I get any symptoms.

I'm almost always on suppressive therapy so I don't get recurrences more than 1 or 2 x/year at this point.

I voted "never that I'm aware of".

I had my first OB 3.5 years ago, and I've never had another one since. I take Valtrex daily, so I guess it's working (thank you Valtrex!)

I had symptoms after contracting HSV2 in August 2004, but no OB's. I had my first and only OB November 2004.

For some strange reason, I have to be taking my birth control pills AND Valtrex to feel totally okay. If I stop taking either one, I start to feel strange, so I just keep taking both. There's no scientific evidence, but that's what seems to work for me.

Can I ask what you mean? Do you mind sharing what kind of symptoms you had? And they didn't lead to an ob?

About 2-3 days after having sex with my herpetrator, I started feeling itchy and burning like I had either a yeast infection or a UTI, or both. Did two courses of treatment for both as well as testing for every STI under the sun (except Herpes, of course). Finally, my doctor decides that it's probably my body reacting strangely to a new partner because it wasn't anything else. I had no OB until almost 4 months later.

I usually don't actually get an OB, though, because of episodic antivirals (currently famvir) that I start when I notice a "tingle".

...and usually those are extremely mild ob's. For some reason I had a more dramatic and longer-lasting ob a few months ago. I'm considering going on anti-virals at least episodically - and suppressively if I'm ever in a relationship again.

I voted "I'm not really sure".

I'm on Valtrex, 1g daily. But, I really don't know that I can say, with certainty, when I've ever had an ob since my initial. I had a few boughts with yeast (I think) after my initial. My first 4-6 months were strange and very irritated all the time. But, looking back, I'm not sure what was an ob and what was yeast, reaction to condoms, bv, etc. Right now, if someone told me I definitely had an ob happening right this instant, I'd say the little red spot on my lower back was supposed to be my clue.

That's what's hardest, I think. I'm thankful for not having paintful, full-on blisters all the time. Hugs to those who do! But, then again, with subtle signals, it makes it hard to be avoiding contact during obs, you know?

I have had what has acted like GHSVII or over 20 years and it was confirmed by blood last fall that this is what I have. Last year I think I had maybe 2 OBS all year about 6 months apart and the one in June I am not sure if it was a real OB or if I caught it with meds in time. My last known OB was last Sept. In past years I would feel an OB coming on and would go to the medicine cabinet to get my script of acyclovir just to find out that the script had expired so this tells you how often I had an OB. Since coming to this site, I am now keeping track.

I voted 4-6 a year, but this is my 3rd year with herpes, and I have to say that my first year sucked, but I had hormone issues, untreated bv and streb b, and a lousy relationship.

My second year was tons better, but I get most of my obs in the spring/summer, and I think its because that's when my allergies get really bad.

My third year was similiar to my second, if not a bit better.

I have been on suppression since day 1, and have tried all 3 antivirals. Started on valtrex, switched to famvir in the midst of the bv/strep b mess, and am now on acyclovir. Its working well so far.

How long have you had it?

You might try splitting the 1gm and take 500 mg twice a day.

Also if you are having that many ob's a year while on suppressive therapy - you need a further work up to confirm that it's all herpes going on. Most folks get significant relief from suppressive therapy and when you don't - it's time for a further work up. Don't hesitate to ask about having the supplies at home to do home pcr swabbing too. That way when you get what you think is an ob you can swab it and see if it really is. Most folks on the board who have done this have found out that herpes really wasn't the cause of all their symptoms so it's really worthwhile doing it.

If I don't take 1000mg of Valtrex daily, I will get an OB within 3-5 days. I don't know if my period triggers it. I have had genital herpes for almost 6 years and it is like clock work - every month I will get an OB if not on the pills.

I voted "not sure". I went on suppressives 6 months after I got H because I was having monthly OBs, but now I've had it for 3 1/2 years and haven't had an obvious OB since going on suppressives... not sure what it would be like now that I'm a "vetran" if I stopped them.

After that horrible first year of about 2 outbreaks a month switching to Famvir really changed things for me. I'm now at about 3 times per year. It does seem the severity ramps up now, though, but that might be I'm more likely to get outbreaks when sick or stressed.

well i am at about 18 months and i have less obs... a lot less. i actually started valtrex at about 4 months and this year my insurance changed and i had to go onto acyclovir and what a difference. no obs since i changed to it. now i was taking 500 mg valtrex 2x a day and i do not think it agreed with me so the change was the best thing for me. i will admit i take 400 mg 3 times a day and when i feel a slight itch i up it by one and it goes away the next day. if that continues this way i will consider myself lucky for now. i know we are supposed to take it 2x a day for suppression but i prefer 3x a day with what i have read and since i am pretty new to it. it helps me both physically and psychologically.

I get 2-3 outbreaks per month and I'm not on suppressive therapy. Was diagnosed with HSV2 almost 20 years ago and the outbreaks seems to have gotten more numerous, especially in the last 3 or 4 years. There are a couple of reasons I don't take the antivirals: I have a lot of nerve pain and I have heard the antivirals suppress the lesions but not the pain. Also, I don't do well with many prescription drugs. I seem to get all of the worst side effects. The third reason is that my insurance won't cover the drugs so I'd have to pay out of pocket. If I really did get the relief with not too many side effects, I would pay it. Maybe I should give it a try? I've gotten samples a couple of times from the dr. but chickened out as far as taking them. Can anyone comment on which one would have the least side effects? Most of the time drugs give me anxiety and insomnia and I end up deciding the condition I'm treating is better than staying up nights and being nervous!

Kai

try taking lysine (its over the counter and in-expensive)and watching your diet to see if anything is triggering your outbreaks. I think just eliminating nuts from my diet helped a LOT.
I take 1000 mg of lysine every morning.
I've also had good results with h-balm, I use it every morning after I shower. I was having 1-2 outbreaks a month, seemed to be triggered by sex or my period.

   Kai,
I'm taking 200mg of Acyclovir 2 pills daily for suppression. I have had no side effects to date. I was diagnosed early June 2010 and taking it since (also taking BP, allergy & vit D meds).

I get my RX at Walmart with the "no Insurance" deals they have I pay only $20.00 for a 90 day supply!! Maybe this could be an option for you.

The proper dose for suppression is 400 mg twice a day. Unfortunately Walmart refuses to acknowledge that 200 mg of Acyclovir is a dose for NOTHING. So, they are cheap, but not as cheap as they could be if they accepted the fact that you need at least 800 mg of Acyclovir a day (more for an OB).

If taking 200 mg twice a day works for you, that's fine. But it's possible you're wasting your money taking it at all because maybe you wouldn't be getting OBs anyway. And if you have a negative partner, the dose that would protect that partner is the 400 mg twice a day. I wouldn't trust half that amount to do the job.

C.

I use to have 2-3 outbreaks a month.
I am now down to 1 outbreak in the last 2 years (and I know what triggered it). I quit eating nuts and chocolate, try not to lay out in the sun, take valtrex, lysine and a pro-biotic daily and use h-balm. I also had a uterine ablation to stop my period (which seemed to be a trigger) and did laser hair removal (brazilian) to eliminate the friction that seemed to be agravating the area. Yes, severe but I couldn't live with the continuous outbreaks anymore.
The one outbreak I had was triggered by a vacation to hawaii where I tanned and gave in and ate some macadamia nuts. No more hawaii : (

I had obs for 3 months non stop pretty much but didn't know it because the were so insignificant. I thought I cut myself shaving and because of the sensitive area, vaginal opening, I thought it was just taking it's time healing. It would go away so I thought but a few weeks later start bothering me again. The liar I was with said he just had sensitive skin when I noticed his obs. I had a couple more in a 4 month period of time but at a much larger interval. Not every couple weeks like before. I never thought anything of it untill I woke up one morning with swollen groin glands and a severe rash on my hip. Went to the doc, they were so awesome, got my 10 day meds, blood tests and diagnosis and haven't had an ob again....yet. I'm no longer with the one that gave it to me so I'm sure that has something to do with it not recurring.

I've had HSV2 a year this October. I had an outbreak every month the first year. I voted 7+. I take suppressive Famvir 250 2x a day. I have a symptom everyday of itching or nerve pain in my pelvic area. The breakouts seem to be tapering off but not the daily phn Foe me hormones play a very important role in activating the virus.

Oh my...I wish that I would have seen this a while ago. Until about 2 months ago I had one every month this year and last now that I think about it.

I'm not on med's right now so that may be the reason why.

Just officially discovered I have H-2. Twenty-five years ago during my first pregnancy I had a small rashy place on the cheek of my butt. The Dr's I had were not good. They kept culture testing internally and never found anything. Never really told me what the rash was. Thru 26 years of marriage my spouse never had any outbreaks of any kind.

Now separated and going into a relationship with a wonderful man we were both tested for everything including herpes. I was positive for H-2 him nothing. I am hoping that the relationship continues but I understand if he doesn't want to. He is thinking about it.

So no breakouts for 25 years. Nothing. I am now (this past Friday) on Famciclovir 250mg twice a day to lower the possible chances of passing it on.

Has anyone heard of someone going for so long without a breakout nor passing it?

I took acyclovir for my first OB, which was about 25 years ago. I've had maybe 2 or 3 genital OBs that I can recall. I also have herpetic whitlow and have had about 3 outbreaks on my middle finger (oh the irony lol) in all these years.

Edited because I should add that I chose the never category because that seemed to be the best fit, but really it's one OB every handful of years.
