Hopefully by responding to this poll - folks who are new to HHP can see how real people living with genital herpes treat their herpes so that they can start making decisions as to how to treat their own

Feel free to add any comments you want about how you treat your herpes too

As always - thank you all for your continued participation in these polls

I voted for never treated with antivirals. I don't treat it with anything, I am pretty much asymptomatic. When I do have any symptoms they are mild and not bothersome, just maybe some irritation.

As far as my cold sores which are also herpes , I began to dab hydrogen peroxide on the sores and they began to heal faster and come back smaller. Could be just a coincidence but that's my experience.

I have genital type 1 and I voted episodic therapy...I've only had two known obs since my original diagnosis 2 1/2 years ago. There's also been a couple times I used my Valtrex when having unusual itching just to be sure! I get a new Rx when I go in for my annual visit and tell her what I need (500mg twice daily for 3 days, she gives me 12 pills - enough for 2 obs - with refills.)

I take acyclovir for OBs only at this time. I do have a prepackaged bottle on hand of 100 tablets of 400 mg to take for my next OB or my next relationship--if we decide that I take suppression. In the past I have only avoided sex during an OB or when I felt one coming on. My OBs are not that frequent or as severe any more, but I still notice them.

I've been on suppression since the first day I had symptoms, 3 years ago.

Things have really calmed down for me - it was hell at first, but I am still scared at this point to not go off them.

I take Valtrex episodically for ghsv1 obs. Usually my obs are about once every year or so.

I've been on Valtrex 500 mg daily since my diagnosis in Oct 08. Luckily I have never had an OB/asymtomatic that I know of - thank goodness!

I've never taken antivirals. If the outbreak is bothering me, I take ibuprofen. Sometimes I use tea tree oil to speed the drying up process.
My outbreaks are generally tolerable without any intervention.

I was taking acyclovir 400 twice daily but since the last "relationship" ended, I got lazy and just did the morning dose. It seems to be preventing outbreaks at this dose, so now I just take one 400 every day.

I take 500mg Valtrex daily, have since I was first diagnosed, and I haven't had an outbreak since my primary in December 2004.

I take it probably equally for suppression and to reduce transmission since my partner is non H.

And, like Jess said, I'm a little afraid to go off since it's working out so well for me.

I've had HSV2 a year. I have been on every antiviral. Unfortunately the acyclovir and valtrex made me feel dizzy so I switched to Famvir. I was on Famvir for about 4 months everyday and kept feeling zapping and itching so I wanted to see how I did off the medication. I was much worse off felt like an elephant was sitting on my lap due to bone pain. The nerve pain was also more severe. I went back on the Famvir everyday and have no intention of going off it for at least a year. I still have symptoms everyday but not as bad.

I don't even know if that's the spelling. I never had bad outbreaks at all and to some extent wish I didn't have to take it but my BF is negative and I would feel too bad to transmit this stigma to anyone else.
