"UK & herpes"

Thanks to Liten who wrote to a nurse counselor (May 2005) and got this reply about suppressive therapy in the UK:

Reply about valtrex:

Valtrex is currently licensed in the UK for both treatment of initial
or recurrent infections and for suppression of recurrent infections.
It does not yet have a licence for reduction of transmission - as in
the US (although they hope to have this licence next year i.e 2005).
A UK physician may prescribe Valtrex for suppression of recurrent
infections - I believe the average duration is around 6 months - but
this is at the discretion of the individual doctor. As Valtrex is
available on the NHS some doctors will only prescribe short courses
due to the cost - which is very hard for the patient. The patient
could ask how much a private prescription costs - it could be fairly
costly - I think around 65 per month.
If she has severe recurrent infections she could ask for a second
opinion for suppressive therapy.

Kind regards,
Nurse Counsellor
IHA

Pumpkin gets suppressive therapy in the UK. She had a heck of a timne trying to find someone to prescribe it. Here'e an excerpt from her thread (link above) from May 28, 2005:

Saw the private doc in London, explained the story and he listened carefully!!!!

I asked for suppressive therapy and - hold the phone - he prescribed them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He did some swabs - I've got lots of discharge, so we're trying to find out what that is. He's given me 3 months of suppressives, aciclovir, and I have to call him and tell him how I'm getting on. I can then get a repeat prescription if its helping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He said that I can take some control of my treatment - and I have.

It wasn't cheap, 200 for the appointment and the swabs, and then 50 for the pills and the stuff for thrush etc.

It can be difficult to find a place to get a herpes blood test in the UK. So, learn from those who have been down the road already. And be sure to check out the HHP Doctor list as well for a few more referrals.

from pumpkin:
I want to tell anyone that is having trouble getting a type specific Igg test in the UK that you can get it done at

Samedaydoctor
14 Wimpole Street,
London W1G 9SX

(near Bond Street Station
and Harley Street)
enquiry@samedaydoctor.co.uk
020 7631 0090

It is a private clinic, but they are really friendly and helpful.

from lesson_learnt:
There is a free GUM clinic in Enfield. They're pretty good and have walk in clinics on various days and times.

from rajah:
Same day STD testing in the UK - London

I've added a link on our awareness page to http://www.stdtesting.org.uk/

from alias:
I think that Chelsea and Westminster Hospital do this test- I found a paper on a website, see below, which also has reasons why it isn't routinely tested, though I think they are crazy.
http://www.herpes.org.uk/art_waters.pdf.

from Doddlebug:
You can also have a blood test done privately through the Herpes Virus association. Contact them here http://www.hva.org.uk/ and they can arrange it. The test is an international standard ELISA type specifc test.

The advanatge of having the test done privately is that you will get a copy of the lab results. This may or may not be uselful to you!

You can also get a PCR test here. This is a much more sensitive swab based test. But you will probably have to pay for it.

may i just add, the clinic in enfield will NOT provide the bloodtest for h. If you have sores then they will swab them and provide antivirals free of charge. They also test for and treat all other sti's, yeast and bacterial infections free of charge.

I am going for my blood test at 'same day doctor', mentioned above, tomorrow. It's expensive (150 just for the herpes test). They have many clinics throughout the u.k and the one in central london, and probably others, are open 7 days a week.
