"Strep B"

Have any of the other ladies reading this ever dealt with a Strep B vaginal infection? I've been fighting with this thing since late last year. I've been through 2 doses of different antibiotics, but it keeps coming back. It's difficult to find non pregnancy related information on the subject, but I read that 25% of the adult population has this. Generally it is non-symptomatic, but I've been fighting with a (sorry about this) discharge for too many months.

If anyone else has been in this situation and found a solution, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there -

I just finished my first round of antibiotics for this, so we'll see. It feels like the itchies and discharge are coming back already.

What kind of antibiotics are you on?

Jess

   Hi Jess,

Sorry for the slow response. I've tried Keflex (which is a pennicillan) and clindamycin. Neither worked. I'm also having chronic yeast infections. This stuff never seems to end.

Hi Patrice -

I just started my second round of augmentin. Isn't this shit fun?

I haven't had the chronic yeast, but this itching is making me insane!!

My doc told me that the ranges on a test go from 1+ to 4+, and I guess that shows how much you have. I have only 1+, and the doc said that doesn't usually show symptoms, but I am having major issues with itch and discharge, so go figure!

Are you aware that an over growth of candida as a side effect of the antibiotics will cause a discharge?

My favorite yeast killer is Pau D' Arco and Threelac to help put back the good bacteria the antibiotics kills. Since Pau D' Arco is also good for the immune system I would just get tested after working with your yeast levels to see where you stand.

Try doing searches with Strep B, herbs, homeopathy, or my e-mail adress is Arlene at BaxleyStudios dot com.

Darlene -

Have you been back to the doc to make sure you still have strep? Maybe you have something else going on now?

You have been on a lot of antibiotics. You should check out the support forum and read the thread on Femdophilous. You might just need some good bacteria back.

   Hey Ladies,

For Yeast Infections try Acidophilus. You can get it @ any local pharmacy or GNC. Acidophilus is a natural bacteria that aids in digestion, it found most commonly in yogurt. This bacteria also works wonders on yeast. I have suffered from repeated yeast infections and this was the only thing that seems to curb it.

I also had Strep B, but my doctor said that it didn't need to be cured until I decided to have a baby. My doctor said that if she gave medicine to cure me, most likely it will come back again. She made it seem like it was an endless cycle. And as we all know, the more we take medicine, antibotics, etc, the more our bodies build up a tolerance for them.

I will say this much, on my last two pap's the Strep B was gone. But I never had the itchness that is the complaint of many.

Have a nice day!

Yes, if you aren't symptomatic, you don't need meds until you decide to get pregnant.

Hello, I have been having the exact same problems for a couple months now. I was caught in a cycle of group B strep/yeast/staph infections and thought it would never end. It didn't feel better during antibiotic treatment or even after.
The solution for me, however, was to get lacidobacillus (or whatever that good bacteria is in yogurt) capsules and insert them directly into the vagina 3 times a week for a month. I refrained from intercourse as well. I am finally back to normal now. I think the trick is to be patient and let your vagina balance out its environment (even though having the patience with stuff like this is hard). One thing I can say for sure is that repeated use of antibiotics will only make your condition worse. It kills the weak bacteria and leaves the strong ones to reproduce, making your condition more painful/more frequent. Women often have chronic infections of these kinds because of long-term antibiotic use. It seems hard now but resist the urge just take antibiotics again and again. The is no short-term fix for something like this. On top of that, don't listen to your doctor who keeps prescribing you antibiotics, especially if he is male, he WON'T understand the delicate balance of the vagina. That's all my advice.

Have you tried acidic vaginal jelly. I got a script for it about 6 months ago, and it helped balance everything out. Helped my constant yeast and strep-b problems.

Delila makes a wonderful point - too much antibiotic use can make it worse, as you then keep killing the good bacteria.

Femdophilous (Grace knows how to spell that and will kill me because I don't know it yet lol) is really good to help balance things back out. Check www.jarrow.com for info on ordering online or finding a store locally that sells it.

Saw my GYNO last week and he suggested twice a week applying extra virgin olive oil. Told me I could find it in the cooking section (he giggled at that... sheesh, he thinks I don't cook!) lol.

But he said that it was natures cure and I would notice a difference if I started using it on the girly skin twice a week.

For those of you that had the strep b, what were your exact symptoms? I have burning on the INSIDE. Never on the outside. I also have some redness.

It is NOT an std.

Its another bacterial infection about 20% of women will have in their bodies.

Many women won't have symptoms, but obviously many do.

I have just been told that I have strep B and I have been fighting these symptoms for years and finally they find out what it is. I did find on the internet that you can be given meds through an I.V. and that seems to work. My doctor won't let me try it yet because she likes for me to be in pain, but I am going to give the antibiotics a shot and then push for another method if it doesn't work. Let me know if you find something that works for you.

Well I certainly hope that your doctor doesn't like for you to be in pain, but if you think that's the case, it sounds like you need a new doctor.

For several months I had BV which was treated twice, apparently unsuccessfully, until I got a culture and we realized I had BV and yeast AND Strep B. Metrogel for the BV, Diflucan for the yeast, and a round of amoxicillan for the Strep B has seemed to do the trick for me.

C.

Yes! I've had it for close to two years now and it's destroying my life. At first I thought I had a yeast infection so I used Monistat, but that made it burn soooo bad (has anybody else with Strep B had that reaction to a yeast medication???)I then saw about 3 different docs and they just kept saying that nothing was wrong with me, but I was persistant and finally it started coming up culture positive for strep B. Antibiotics only seem to make it worse (the symptoms just intensify when I take them). I also have lower abdominal pain (like mild menstrual cramps) that comes and goes. I've had two pelvic ultrasounds and they say that I'm fine. I don't know what to do... if anybody with this condition has found something that works to treat it, or just lessen the symptoms, PLEASE let me know... I'm only 28 and can't imagine living the rest of my life like this!!!

You'll probably have to continue to be persistant and assertive. I'd think it's time to see an infectious disease doc to deal with this. Don't take the crap that there's nothing wrong when there obviously is something going on.

What do your results say? There should be a +1 to a +4.

I'd also wonder if this has caused vulvodynia. But Raj is right - don't let them just blow you off.
