"hair falling"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-03-08 AT 10:07 PM (CST)

I've noticed in the past year or so my hair has been falling out a lot more than before and it's not as thick as it used to be. I am taking a multivitamin, fish oil, silica (which is supposed to be great for hair) and extra vitamin c and zinc. I added the multi and extra zinc in last five months or so b/c of my cervial dysplasia and before I was just taking vitamic C, fish oil and silica.

I eat pretty healthy in general as well, maybe too much chocolate sometimes. I guess I've been under a lot of stress and I know that can cause hair loss but I was just wondering if anyone had any tips, supplements or anything that helped you or someone you know with this.

That has happened to me in waves before, every once in awhile I just start shedding everywhere. It was a nightmare after I quit the pill.

How much do you get out in the sun? That Vitamin D is wonderful for the hair, skin and nails. Silica is good too, and I swear by my fish oils.

What shampoo/conditioner are you using? Do you have hard water in your area?

And chocolate is a good thing. No such thing as too much.

oh yeah - check your thyroid - hypo (underactive) thyroid can cause weird stuff like that. Google it and you shall see. And as always, get a copy of your test results

Let's see, the vitamin D could be an issue. I started to get chemical peels and microdermabrasions for my skin last year and ever since I've been staying away from the sun and using sunblock when I am in it so that would def. lower the vitamin D in my body in comparison to years before. I also take fish oil, but not cod liver oil (the fish oil doesn't have vitamin D in it, cod liver does) b/c I am afraid of vitamin D overdose but perhaps my levels are too low, maybe I should be tested.

I am not and have never been on any hormonal birth control so that would not be an issue.

As far as shampoo, I use either Aubrey organics or Burt's bees so basically all natural, no chemical shampoo, no conditioner but have always done the no conditioner thing, perhaps I need to start on a conditioner now? I used to use this hair oil once a week from Better Botanicals, it made my hair really shiny and healthy looking, maybe I should get some more, don't know why I stopped using it really. I've always been the wash and go girl, my hair is long and wavy and it's always looked nice just natural so I don't blow dry it or put any other products in it.

As far as water, I don't think it's too hard. I used to live in a place with well water and now I live in the city so it's city water I wonder if the added chemicals like chlorine could have an effect.

As far as thyroid, never had that checked so that might be another thing to do.

Thank you so much for your tips. I can totally tell that my hair isn't as thick and I also that it's falling out at a higher rate.

The chlorine is probably the culprit. Both of my daughters had problems with their hair when they were living in dorms after living home with well water. I don't know what the solution is. There are websites out there for people into long hair with a lot of hints on haircare. It might be worthwhile to check them out.

Thanks Lenore, your daughters had an issue with hair falling out at a higher rate as well or other issues? I know they have chlorine filters for showers, maybe I need to look into that.

Both girls had problems with thinning hair and the little one has curly hair and it's much less curly and her roommate is having the same problems with hair loss and less curls.

this is interesting b/c my hair used to be pretty wavy and now it's almost straight and just a lot less full. Sounds like you are saying that the younger one is still in college, is the older one back and has her hair gotten back to normal? I am going to research chlorine filters now.

I wonder if it's mostly an issue for people who've had well water and then made the switch rather than always used water with chlorine b/c you would think that this would happen to everyone but it doesn't seem to. Or maybe some people are just more sensitive than others to chlorine.

I know we talked about this recently. Whenever my vitamin D levels are low (which is really common for me) my hair starts falling out. I also have thyroid issues and when that is off, it falls out. I take Vitamin D suppliments, and it does help.

hair loss is also a big symptom of PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrom.
It is related to insulin resistance which messes with your hormones. I would go to a reproductive endocrinologist and ask to be tested for PCOS, including a fasting glucose test, and ask about insulin resistance.

I have been also experiencing a massive hair fall so is there any treatment that I can again get the growth of hair like I had in the past. I am very annoyed by this and want to deal with it as fast as possible.

I have seen people who suffer from stress normally embrace this ailment. The best option is to take a proper sleep at intervals to reduce the stress. this will definitely help in reducing the hair fall.

If this works then naturally you can share your opinion on this forum.
