"going back to school ( I hope! )"

so I've been searching for a new job for about a year now and so far, no luck. I've put some thought into it and have decided to buck it up and go back to school to complete my BSN to help me in the job market. Hopefully I can get into an online program for fall and finish it in under 3 years so I can follow my daughter wherever she ends up after grad school I'm finding that no one cares how many years of experience you have as a nurse or how smart you are or what you've done with yourself, without that BSN now they won't consider you I'm ready to get out of bedside nursing and have been trying to decide whether I even want to still be a nurse or not. Figured it's easiest to just get the BSN and start in a new part of nursing at this point in my life. So many parts of nursing I could get into even though unfortunately there isn't the nursing shortage they predicted so jobs are hard to come by. thankfully I have a job until I find a new one!

now if I can just get through this application process...lol really don't get why they need my high school transcripts and SAT scores from 30 years ago. I don't think they will reflect what kind of student I'd be now. I was a total party girl through nursing school, perhaps I'll need to return to that to get through this all

Good luck Grace. I've been keeping my nursing license active even though I quit working in 2003 and have been debating just letting it go. Been out of the game for over 10 years and with the new procedures, drugs, etc. I would need a refresher class. I have been doing the 20 hours of CEU's at home. Yes that piece of paper is what they want--I think a lot of hospitals need to have BSN nurses for certain types of ranking. I didn't get my ADN until I was 38 and even then working full time and taking night classes was about more than I could handle. Now at my age I don't think my brain could handle it. Had a colonoscopy Friday and saw a lot of the gals I used to work with when I was at the hospital. One of them was just finishing up her BSN, but she is 20 years younger than me. It's difficult to do bedside nursing as we age, so hope you can find something you love.

I am just a few classes shy of getting a Legal Assistant degree to go along with my finance degree. The classes I need are only taught at night and that is when I work, so I have had a break from school for a while. I have tried to get a job in this field and yes, they want me to have the degree no matter what my experience is. I do not want to retake the SATs but if I did, I am sure I would do better than what I did my senior year of high school. I would hope any school would take my current (somewhat current) transcripts from working on my finance degree and my Legal Assistant degree--I could not imagine having to pull my SAT scores out now, so I really feel for you.

I have a saying that you are never too old to reach for your dream. If this is truly your dream, then go out and reach for it!

so the first school I try to apply to online won't accept my application because the nursing school I went to no longer exists for me to chose it from the drop down menu. They also want to know the date I took the SATs....really? That was like 30 years ago so I don't quite recall....he he he Oh they also want to know about my parents. Wonder if I can just send mom the bill too?

always an adventure...

I think you're doing the right thing. One of our daughters-in-law is a research nurse at the SIU medical school here, She's now got her Masters and is going for more school next Fall to be something like an NP, but not quite the same thing.

At that school, have you tried actually talking to someone in admissions? That doesn't seem like something that couldn't be worked around.

I emailed for help since my school isn't listed in their menu. the gal who emailed me back a few times, was silly enough to let the title of correspondence with someone else about my email come back to me - SUSPECT.....lol. so now already I'm labeled as being a suspect admission. good times.

having a good time trying to round up all my transcripts from 30 years ago too. NOT!!

so I got an email yesterday saying that penn state didn't have all my info. I knew it had all been sent and the other school I applied to had it all. so I called. Turns out they had an account under my maiden name as well as my current name. sigh. think it's all straightened out now!!

I hope going to school is easier than getting in is

now to decide if I want to go to the cheaper state school or the more expensive penn state. I'd really like that penn state diploma on the wall but at the same time, I know it's not worth the extra money. Both are all online so it's not like one is closer than the other. I hate being a responsible adult some days but I also don't want to still be paying my loans and my kid's loans after I am retired....lol.

Oh Grace, hope you can start classes this summer or can you start earlier with online classes. Think I would go crazy learning online. If the degree from one school is as good as the other, save your money. You will need a lot of money for retirement. Hopefully your kids will be able to repay their own loans after they graduate and find employment. This is a crazy world we live in where a degree is needed for almost any type of employment. I came out of high school at age 17 and went to work right away as a clerk-typist for the government. Those days are gone. Anyway hope you get a positive response from the schools soon.

i have to do it online. with my work schedule, if I tried to schedule classes 2 days a week, I'd be working the other days and never have time to be prepared At least with online, I can use one day off to do all my home work on and use another to comment on all the stupidass message board type stuff they have you do each week. can even do some class work on my down time at work too

All of this seems so silly after having been a nurse for 26 years...sigh.

It looks like I'm going back to school, too, but on the other side of the desk. The local ITT Technical Institute called me out of the blue and asked if I'd be interested in teaching electronics again. It's been 20 some years since I last taught, but I think it will be fun.

Good for you Grace. I, too, read for pleasure and when someone reads the same book and then tries to dissect it I just hate it!! Also I sometimes wonder if they read the same book. Just finished "Hannah Coulter" by Wendell Berry and really enjoyed it. When do you start your class--must be very soon now. Comp class is still better than speech class. I had to do both when I was in school. Good luck!!

Keep plugging away.

The school I teach at is on quarters. I'm wrapping up my second one of teaching. They've twisted my arm to do two classes next quarter. The second class is an easy one, supervising their "Capstone" projects and it's all students I had my first quarter. They're motivated so it should be a pleasure.

ordering textbooks for my next semester. guess I have to go back to the strip club again for some extra bucks!!!

I don't get why they are so freaking expensive!! Especially the ones I have to buy with the online key so I can't even resell them later. single use is basically what they are which is so wasteful

I knew I should've just given in and looked for a rich husband instead of going back to school!!!

Grace I think you should be able to Ace this class!! I always had the most trouble with the gen ed classes--especially the humanities course I had to take--but I did learn some stuff to help me do crossword puzzles! I'm just so glad those days are behind me. In fact I'm toying with letting my nursing license expire as I'm not too enthused about doing the CEU's any more. I'll be 60 in October and doubt whether I'll ever work in nursing again--or work anywhere for that matter. I've been retired for 11 years now and it's gone by fast.
