"Job Termination"

Here it is a week after my BF was terminated from his job for no cause after 38 years of service to his company. He was 7 months from retirement. They also fired his boss and two other engineers. So, been an interesting week around here. We have been going fishing a lot and last Friday he got a nice 28 inch Northern Pike. This has caused us to change our plans, but we will be fine. Just amazes me how heartless corporate America functions in today's world. Enjoying this amazing weather--80 today so it's back to the Mississippi and more fishing!!

Hope you manage to find some decent lemonade in the deal.

Best to you.

Any chance of a wrongful termination action against them after that many years of service and no reason given? I hope this doesn't impact his retirement income too much.

   I second Raj on this.

My mother retired from the post office 15 years ago--before she really wanted to. Afterwards, she has said to not put off retirement unless you have to. I am trying to get out as soon as I can--just that the post office wants to close/consolidate my office that I may have to go early and take a hefty penalty or work a couple of jobs elsewhere until I have the age and/or get my retirement without a penalty. I have been loyal to this place for over 25 years and even gave them my youth so I am well aware of how loyalty is not appreciated by employers.

Enjoy the fishing and you can do anything you want to now on your own time clock.

We are doing okay, but his pride sure is hurt bad. A lawsuit would be too expensive and I just want him to get over it and not be emotionally invested any further with this company. Went fishing Friday on the Mississippi and got 33 bluegill and 2 bass. So when he gets home from cardiac rehab we are headed west to the river once again. No company pension plan, just his 401K, which is probably for the best. So, for the first time in his life he has applied for unemployment as he's not going to take social security until May. Of course that is only $418 a week, a far cry from what he was earning as an engineer. Maybe someone else will hire him, but at 65 it's probably a stretch. But he will try as he loved using his mind and the challenges in setting up production lines. He is a great mechanical engineer and also has a rare quality that is not found in a lot of the younger employees--common sense! Thanks for the support.

I was 65 back in 2011 when the company I worked 26 years for was bought by a large multi-national company. The new company originally wanted me to stay for 6 months to help the transition and then I was to be retired. After a couple months they figured out that I was the only one who knew the software and the circuit boards for a couple thousand units still in daily use, they asked if I'd stay on part time....for as long as I wanted to.

Like your husband, I don't have a pension, but I have the old company 401k that I rolled into an IRA and now I'm accumulating a few bucks in the new company 401k. I waited until I was 66 to draw full Social Security.

Now I'm also teaching college electronics a couple nights a week, too. I like to keep busy, but your fishing trips do sound nice.

Yes Raj, you had a good situation. Today BF signed the severance agreement and that was another slap in the face as the offer was so humiliating. He was in a low mood when I got home from my line dancing class. But yesterday we hit the blue gill again and limited out--50 bluegill and I got two nice large mouth bass. So we had an enjoyable afternoon and the weather was perfect. Of course, this afternoon as I was removing the rib cages from all the fish fillets, it wasn't so much fun! But to see all those packages of fish in the freezer--we will truly enjoy them this winter. I'm sure BF will be fine once he gets into a retirement routine.

I remember how I felt years ago when I was laid off from a job, had 5 kids and a wife at home to feed with no 401K or savings I could draw on. His situation is so much better so I'm sure he'll adjust and figure out how to use all that spare time.

My advice is to keep active and interested. When you head down this way the next time, please plan on visiting us. We like guests and even have guest rooms. We've got passes to the Lincoln Presidential museum, too. The exhibits change often.

Yes Raj, we are very fortunate to have each other and we will be fine. He is at cardiac rehab this morning and is going to visit his boss who was also fired. His lawyer said it is age discrimination, but so hard to prove and so costly to fight in court. Just not worth it for us. Anyway, we have hunting, fishing, yard work etc and I'm hoping he will find some guy friends to hang out with--us being together 24/7 isn't too healthy either--lol!! Yes I love the Lincoln Museum and have been through it several times. He's not much of a museum guy, but I think he would enjoy it. We do plan on another trip to Kentucky Lake some time and we are looking for an old, used conversion van for traveling and camping. Want something about 20 feet and able to pull our bass boat. Just a step up from tent camping. So if anyway out there knows of a van, let me know. Has to be used and affordable.

Grace, Those were my worst subjects--I'm not an artsy type gal. And I'm just too practical to get into philosophy. Good luck with all that!! And BF is an engineer and not into art etc. Both of us have a lot of common sense and that's why we get along so well.
